Sunday morning was cold and rainy. There were 11 people at the 8:00 am service and 48 in attendance at the 10:00 am service. It was the First Sunday In Lent. The sevice began with the The Great Litany. The Sequence Hymn was, “Forty Days And Forty Nights.” The Gospel Reading was from Luke 4:1-13:
After his baptism, Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"
Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." Jesus answered him, "It is written,
'Worship the Lord your God,
and serve only him.'"
Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written,
'He will command his angels concerning you,
to protect you,'
'On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.
We learn from this passage of the temptation of Jesus for forty day by the Devil and how he overcame those temptations and beat the Devil. The Offertory Anthem was, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee.” The Communion Hymns were, “Lord Who Throughout These 40 Days” and “Abide With Me.” The Recessional Hymn was, “O Love, How Deep How Broad, How High.” A big thank you to Tom Espenshade for playing all the music for Sunday’s service while Arkady Leytush was away.
The Sanctuary Lamp was given by Susan and Paul Parfrey to the glory of God and in celebration of April Ryan’s third birthday.
The Coffee Hour was full of energy as our parishioners greeted one another. The Coffee Hour was hosted by Ronnie Scanlon and Melissa Madden. There were bagels, cake and cookies for all to enjoy with their coffee and tea. Meanwhile, Tom Ramsay was collecting money for the St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon, the ECW were holding their montly meeting in the Choir Room and Father Byrne was meeting with the parents and youth for Confirmation class. It was another busy and wonderful Sunday at All Saints’!
